We Are the World 25 – we present, you decide
OK. It’s time to judge the end product. It’s been 25 years since the first group of artists got together to sing We Are the World. Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie are at the helm again, with this another group of artists, this time for the victims of the earthquake. Performers include Celine Dion, Usher, Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Foxx, Lady Gaga, Jeff Bridges, Rob Thomas, Jason Mraz, Wyclef Jean, Justin Bieber, Pink, Adam Levine, Jonas Brothers, Sugarland, Miley Cyrus, Kanye West, Vince Vaughn, Kid Cudi, Drake, LL Cool J, Will.I.Am, Mos Def and Julianne Hough. Notably, original footage and vocals of Michael Jackson (and bizarre footage of Janet) is inserted.
My take? Maybe I’m getting old, but this remake is CRAP. And I don’t even want to start comparing the talent from the last gen to this gen (since there are “elders” in the remake), but oh my god — they used f*cking AUTOTUNE in this. If that doesn’t tell you how far the music industry has fallen…
About the only entertaining bit of the video is when Jamie Foxx, who played Ray Charles in the biopic (and who did his own singing), takes on the Ray Charles part of the song.
Here’s the original so you can cleanse your mind of that remake — and there are many reputable charities to donate to that will aid relief efforts in Haiti. You can find many listed here.
I have a poll going on at my pad..
