In what may be one of the most damaging outbreaks of tornado in U.S. history, over 250 people are said to have died in the devastating storms that have ripped across the south and mid-west this month.


The video below, captured in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is especially harrowing: as a massive tornado -- estimated to be up to a mile wide -- passes by, the only sounds viewers can hear is a distant rumbling and the breathing of one very scared camera operator.

At least 128 people died in that state alone. In all, fatalities occurred in five states: Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia and Arkansas.
