Rick Santorum's comments about involuntary euthanasia in The Netherlands have triggered a furious backlash from that country's citizens. On Friday's The Rachel Maddow Show, Rachel welcomed Dutch news anchor Erik Mouthaan, who discussed how the Dutch people are reacting to the former Republican Senator's remarks.

Mouthaan did a quick negation of each of Santorum's claims, stating that some of his statements are not only false, but insulting. People in The Netherlands, he says, are amazed that someone who is being taken seriously as a candidate for the highest office in the land is allowed to lie so blithely and openly.

He goes on to say that Dutch people are used to being held up as an example of out-of-control liberalism, having been first in gay marriage, first in marijuana legalization, and so forth. "If your viewers were to form a country, it would be The Netherlands," he quips. The Dutch government, however, is mostly playing down the remarks, because they do not want to get drawn into the back and forth of American election-year politics.
