On the "Worst Persons" segment of his show Wednesday night, Countdown host Keith Olbermann accused Fox News host Bill O'Reilly of hypocrisy for attacking Ben & Jerry's.
The ice cream company has announced it would donate a large sum of money to the "Occupy Wall Street" movement, including grants to individual activists. O'Reilly on Tuesday questioned whether Ben & Jerry's could be held legally responsible if the "agitators" they financially supported ended up hurting or killing someone.
"Leaving aside O'Reilly's exaggerated statement about violence at Occupy, he raises a fascinating point," Olbermann said. "If you publicly encourage someone indirectly to agitate, destroy property, hurt people, commit violent crimes or actually kill somebody, can you be held legally responsible? I wonder why Bill wonders why?"
He then played a series of clips in which O'Reilly demonized George Tiller, a doctor at a clinic in Kansas that performed late-term abortions. O'Reilly repeatedly referred to him as "Tiller the baby killer." In 2009, Tiller was shot and killed by anti-abortion activist Scott Roeder.
"So if you keep calling Doctor George Tiller 'Tiller the baby killer' in front of what you boast is the largest audience in cable news and boast of your own influence over your viewers, can you be held legally responsible when Doctor Tiller is then assassinated by domestic terrorists? If not legally, I think Bill O'Reilly just agreed you can be held moral responsible."
O'Reilly has refused to apologize for his comments.
