In a video uploaded to YouTube on Tuesday, Ohio state Sen. Nina Turner (D) blasted Republicans across the country for pushing legislation aimed at reducing a woman's access to an abortion.
"Are you sick of hearing about lawmakers trying to protect women's reproductive and sexual health?" she said. "Do you think it is crazy that in 2012, we have to fight battles that have already been fought to preserve our access to birth control?"
"It seems that only women have the privilege of being protected by lawmakers. Why not extend the same courtesy to the sexual health of all people?"
Turner has introduced legislation that would require men to undergo sex therapy, receive a cardiac stress test and get a notarized affidavit signed by a sexual partner affirming impotency in order to get a prescription for any erectile dysfunction drug. The men would also receive information about “pursuing celibacy as a viable lifestyle choice.”
The bill was introduced as a direct response to a “fetal heartbeat bill” proposed by Republican Lynn Wachtmann, which would prohibit abortion once a heartbeat is detected, as early as six weeks into a pregnancy.
"Will you join me in asking your state legislature to think about the health of men in the same way that they think about the health of women?" Turner asked. "Together, we can expose the hypocrisy, and put an end to the vicious, vile attacks on our health."
