Anderson Cooper claims he read his mother’s erotic novel
ABC broadcast a rather awkward interview on Thursday night, featuring CNN news anchor Anderson Cooper describing how his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, likes to dish on her sexcapades with comedian Kathy Griffin, and how he’s even read his mom’s erotic novel.
“My mom wrote, has written a bunch of books, one of which was an erotic novel,” Cooper told late night talk host Jimmy Kimmel. “The other was a romance memoir, which was about, basically, all the guys she hooked up with. And she asked me to proofread it. I know. Exactly.”
That little anecdote came after he described how Griffin once stayed over at his home while he was at work, sending him a stream of nude photos depicting her splayed across his furniture.
And somehow, that’s where it really got weird.
“My mom got around,” he explained. “She dated Marlon Brando for a night. Literally, she and her friend Carol Matthau, went to movie — like, this was when Marlon Brando was in On the Waterfront Brando — and they decided they both wanted to date him. And they both succeeded in dating him… Literally within short succession.”
Cooper added: “My mom wrote this book at age 85 and was describing a guy she was currently dating — I don’t know if I can say this — as the ‘Nijinsky of cunnilingus.’ Yeah. So, there you go.”
Describing her book, Obsession: An Erotic Tale, to an interviewer with Time in 2009, Vanderbilt said that Cooper’s reaction to it was “just amazing.”
“He said that the seven most horrifying words you can hear from a mother are, ‘I’m going to write an erotic novel,'” she said. “But he’s fine with it, and of course I gave it to him before I even sent it off.”
