Katrina vanden Heuvel, editor and publisher of The Nation, on Monday warned against approaching the fight against terrorism as a war.

"This could be a perpetual war," she told Viewpoint host Eliot Spitzer.

She said the destruction wrought by military operations could actually create more terrorists, leading to a cycle of violence. It could also lead to the growth of executive power in the United States and the loss of freedoms.

Heuvel said the United States' use of drones to strike suspected terrorists in Pakistan and Yemen could have repercussions in the future as well.

"Other countries will have drones soon, and if we are violating them, and the use of them, without transparency and accountability and a Congress checking the executive's power to use this in secrecy, we are in grave danger," she explained.
