MSNBC host Rachel Maddow on Monday mocked Wheaton College, located in a Chicago suburb, for challenging the contraception mandate while providing emergency contraception.
The new Health & Human Services Department mandate requires most employers to provide free birth control coverage in their health insurance policies.
"When the Obama administration unveiled the new insurance regulation that requires health insurance plans to cover birth control, Wheaton College said it was outraged, outraged at the idea of having to include emergency contraception in the college's health plans," she explained. "They said as a college, they believe emergency contraception is morally wrong. They said being forced to include it in the health plans would be a violation of their freedom, it would trample on their rights."
But the conservative Christian college, which only recently lifted its ban against dancing on campus, already covered emergency contraception prior to the mandate.
"So what do you do when you get called out in something like this?" Maddow wondered. "Do you give up? Do you admit the fact you've already been offering birth control in the health plans, and that means, by definition, a rule making you offer birth control doesn't exactly trample on your rights? Of course you don't admit that."
The college has scrambled to remove its coverage of emergency contraception and plans to continue its legal fight.
