Appearing onstage at a Washington, D.C. concert on Monday night, performance artist Madonna urged her fans to vote for President Barack Obama, who she called "a black Muslim."

"Y'all better vote for fucking Obama, okay?" she said during a brief intermission. "For better or for worse, alright? We have a black Muslim in the White House. Now that's some shit. That's some amazing shit. It means there's hope in this country."

Madonna's Muslim comment appeared to strike many in the audience as a joke, but it's not clear if that's how she indended it. The 54-year-old singer previously endorsed Obama by painting his name across her lower back.

Her comments came as she was speaking Monday night about the long struggle for civil rights in America, touching upon Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War, then moving onto Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s trials during the civil rights movement.

"Think about it," Madonna said. "In 1864, if I have my number correct... Abraham Lincoln was president of the United States. Right? And what was he fighting for? Fighting slavery, right? Fighting for freedom. And they killed him, as they do. All the prophets. More than 100 years later, Martin Luther King, Jr. came here to march in the civil rights movement. And he won, but they killed him, as they do."

She continued: "And now it is so amazing and incredible to think that we have an African-American in the White House! Those fine human beings did not die for nothing. They fought for our freedom. Not just African-Americans, but for all people of all colors. For people who are different, unconventional, for people who want to believe in what they want to believe."

The Pew Research Center said in July that surveys show 30 percent of Republicans believe Obama is a Muslim, and only 49 percent of voters in general correctly identified him as a Christian. The president's faith has been the subject of numerous conspiracy theories popular among conservatives since 2008.

Madonna went on to say that her fans should "support the man, goddammit." Her publicist did not respond to Raw Story's request for comment.
