'Attention-starved' Trump brutally mocked for 'pathetic' Office of Former President announcement
January 26, 2021
On Monday evening, Donald Trump announced he was creating the "Office of the Former President" in Palm Beach, Florida.
According to CNN reporter Kaitlan Collins, the new office, which is to be run by former aides in the Trump White House, "will be responsible for managing President Trump's correspondence, public statements, appearances, and official activities," and will "carry on the agenda of the Trump administration through advocacy."

Although it is common for ex-presidents to have an ongoing public presence, Trump's announcement swiftly drew mockery from commenters on social media. Many ridiculed it as a last-ditch attempt for Trump to remain culturally relevant and influential.

'Vintage Kevin McCarthy': House Republicans rip GOP leader for still sucking up to Trump
January 26, 2021
With Axios reporting that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is walking a tightrope between pro-Trump House members and those who wish the former president would just go away, now Politico is adding some Republicans are rolling their eyes watching the GOP leader trying to stay on Trump's good side.
That has McCarthy's aides unhappy when they are trying to help the GOP leader get his caucus in line at a time when the Republican Party has lost both chambers of Congress and the White House.

As one McCarthy aide lamented, "We're eating sh*t for breakfast, lunch and dinner right now."

McCarthy is already facing criticism for claiming that "everyone" in the country bears some responsibility for the storming of the U.S. Capitol, and some of that criticism is coming from his own members who are accusing him of still currying Trump's approval by diminishing his blame for inciting the riot.

According to Politico, following the right-wing extremist attack on the floor of Congress McCarthy angered Trump by saying the now ex-president bore some responsibility for the chaos that ensued leaving five dead.

Since that time, the GOP leader has softened his stance on Trump's culpability and has tried to spread the blame around.

That has some House Republicans irate at the same time they are seeing their campaign contributions dry up as longtime donors shut off the spigot of dollars in reaction to the events on Jan. 6th.

While Mccarthy seems to have Trump back on his side, he also finds himself being smacked around like a pinata by members who think he's only looking out for himself.

"McCarthy knows he needs to create some distance between his moderates and Trump if he wants to reclaim the House and achieve his dream of securing the speaker's gavel. And then there's McCarthy's other challenge of repairing the GOP's image with political donors and the corporate world, which has frozen PAC dollars to Republicans, such as McCarthy, who challenged the election results," Politico reports.

As for his overtures to Trump while placating his caucus, one GOP House member expressed disgust.

"This is vintage Kevin McCarthy. He says yes to everybody, tries to make everybody happy. And it always comes back to bite you in the butt," the lawmaker said before sarcastically offering, "Will the real Kevin McCarthy please stand up?"

Another Republican officeholder concurred, charging, "He always puts his political finger to the wind and tries to shift. It seems to be based on his personal ambitions."

The Politico report adds, "McCarthy has built his political identity around his close relationship with Trump, emerging as one of his closest and most reliable conservative allies on Capitol Hill. And it's a reputation that McCarthy appears eager to maintain, even in the wake of the Jan. 6 attacks that left five dead."

You can read more here.

Trump's Energy Department's granted a last-minute approval to a controversial transmission line
January 26, 2021
In Trump's last days of office, his minions at the Dept. of Energy approved a presidential permit for a $1 billion project that benefits the world's third-largest utility in what has been erroneously portrayed as a clean energy project to bring electricity from Canada to Massachusetts.
Environmental opponents, including the Sierra Club and Natural Resources Council of Maine, say it's actually "greenwashing," a term coined to describe projects and products that are marketed as being environmentally friendly when they aren't.

"There is zero reliable evidence that the project would result in an actual, verifiable reduction in greenhouse gas emissions," said Sue Ely, an attorney for the Natural Resources Council of Maine. "That's right. Zero."

Iberdrola, a Spanish company that is the third-largest utility in the world, is behind the project. Hydro-Québec could buy low from providers that could include coal from New Brunswick or natural gas from New York to be able to hoard the water behind its 27 reservoirs. The utility could use that water to produce the electricity it sells to Massachusetts as "clean" hydropower.

Higher Emissions

The net result could actually be higher emissions of greenhouse gases. Energyzt estimated that the project could raise total emissions by the equivalent of 80,000 cars a year.

NECEC Transmission LLC plans to build about 53 miles of the 171.4 miles in transmission lines from the Québec border to Lewiston, Maine, crossing 200 rivers, streams and brooks through wilderness in western Maine. Animals such as the American marten and the threatened Canada lynx live in forests on the route, and wild native brook trout are in area streams.

The Maine project illustrates how the Trump administration swung a regulatory axe with no regard for the environment instead of carefully pruning pathways through forested lands. Even the Trump EPA, which proved itself no reliable protector of the environment, raised questions about the project.

Beth Alafat, the EPA's acting chief of the wetlands protection unit, wrote that the Corps should consider putting the transmission lines underground along existing roads or railway corridors.

Twenty-five Maine towns along the corridor voted against the project or rescinded their previous support. New Hampshire blocked an attempt to route the project through that state.

The Army Corps of Engineers found the project would have no significant impact and issued a permit. The Corps, however, did not prepare a full environmental study for the proposed path through Maine and did not ask for public comment on most of the documents it did prepare.
