Projections by two Colorado television stations had state voters approving recreational marijuana use Tuesday night.
Both KUSA-TV and KDVR-TV said Amendment 64, which enables regulated and taxed use of the drug for people at least 21 years of age, similar to established regulation for alcohol.
Opponents of the measure told KDVR they conceded defeat on the issue as of 11 pm EST Tuesday night, with support for the amendment garnering 53 percent of the vote with 37 percent of precincts reporting.
The amendment has gained support over the course of the past month from both and t the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7.
The issue also received some national attention when a former narcotics officer now serving with the Colorado Department of Revenue the medicinal marijuana industry accounted for "over a million square feet of lease space" in Denver.
A study by the Colorado Center on Law and Policy also said legalizing the drug could boost state revenue by about $24 million based on excise taxes alone.
