Democratic Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill on Tuesday ended the Senate bid of a Republican congressman who came under fire after he asserted that women could not get pregnant from “legitimate rape.”

CBS News and other media organizations announced that McCaskill was projected to defeat Republican Rep. Todd Akin with just 20 percent of the precincts counted as of 10:15 p.m. ET.

Earlier this year, the Republican congressman offended female voters by when he declared that pregnancy from "legitimate rape" was not possible because "the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

He later compounded problems by insisting that McCaskill had not appeared “ladylike” during one debate.
