Panda Party: Shameless Edition
So, the Good Men Project (a name apparently chosen to claim all men are good, no matter what they do) published a piece by a woman who got tricked by her rapist friend into defending him on GMP by claiming that rape is a matter of “mixed signals”. (Seriously, I bet that rapist is so proud of himself: He not only got away with rape, but he’s got enough power to get a woman I suspect he thinks is a dum-dum to defend him. Getting one over on multiple ladies!) Then they gave space to a rapist so he could brag about raping women while making excuses about how it’s not really his fault. The excuse given for giving rapists space to brag, share strategies, and spread rape myths that help them get away with raping was that it’s educational, a place to teach people why rapists rape. Except that the rapists in question are almost surely dishonest, so there’s that. Then their editor attacked actual research that shows why rapists rape, forcing non-idiots to conclude that they are not actually interested in educating people so much as spreading propaganda that makes it easier for rapists to rape.
Then, because they stupidly haven’t removed me from their fund-raising list, I get an email from Thomas Matlack in my email this morning. Quoted in full:
This week GMP came under attack for a series of articles that attempted to dig under the covers of sexual abuse, addiction, and stereotypes.A small number of influential and extreme cyber feminists hijacked the conversation and mischaracterize the facts of what we did as supportingrapists. In fact our track record on this issue, and the pieces in question, do nothing of the kind. The attackers were able to get writers atSlate and Feministe to pick up the line of argument, again without consideration of the facts, in an attempt to boycotte GMP.Honestly cyber feminists are not and have never been our core audience. But the way they have attacked our editorial team (all of whom considerthemselves women’s advocates and feminists themselves) is disturbing to say the least. Their words are vicious and unfair.I have written not a response but a reframing piece about Manhood and Goodness here: //bit.ly/TXPTcdIf you believe in our mission I would ask you to read and share my piece as a way to get the conversation about what it means to be a good father, good husband, and good man back on track.I thank you in advance.Tom
