Stephen Colbert: My sister is fair game on my show

Published

on

Comedian Stephen Colbert said Monday he had no qualms about mocking his sister Elizabeth Colbert-Busch, though he plans to support her candidacy for a U.S. House seat in South Carolina.

“I’m willing to break the jewel of my creation to try to do something for her,” he told CNN’s Jake Tapper. “I’m not worried what it would do to me or my show to try to help her as myself, not as my character, and you know if people think that is not the right thing for me to do, I don’t care. She is my sister and I am willing to help her.”

Elizabeth is running as a Democrat for the House seat vacated by Republican Tim Scott after he was appointed to the U.S. Senate. She is expected to win Tuesday’s special congressional primary and could potentially face disgraced former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford in May. Though Colbert plans to help his sister’s political campaign while he is out-of-character, she is fair game while he is in-character.

“I said, if you do something funny, I’m making jokes about you,” he said.

“But she won’t,” Tapper responded.

“Yeah, sure she will,” Colbert replied. “She’s now a politician. Of course she will. She’s perfectly human.”

Colbert has already campaigned on behalf of his sister, saying he supported her mostly because “she’s sane.”

Ex-GOP rep. blasts his own party over racist Trump rallies: ‘Republicans are going to get wiped out in 2020’

Former Republican Congressman Joe Walsh warned his fellow party members on Thursday that they would "get wiped out in 2020" if they failed to denounce the racism seen at Trump rallies.

Walsh told CNN's Brianna Keilar that Trump voters who chanted "send her back" to Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) are full of "hatred."

"It’s ugly, it’s racist, it’s anti-American, and it ought to be denounced," Walsh said. "And Brianna, it should have been denounced by the president last night. But he’s not capable of it.

‘The president is lying’: Trump gets immediately debunked by CNN after claiming he stopped ‘send her back’ chant

President Donald Trump said Thursday that he stopped the North Carolina rally crowd from chanting "send her back" during a rant about Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN). But CNN immediately called him out for the false claim.

"I didn’t like that they did it and I started speaking very quickly," Trump told the press. "Excuse me. Really? If you would have heard, there was a tremendous amount of noise and action and everything else. I started very quickly. And I think you know that. Maybe you’re giving me too much credit. You’re used to giving me too much credit. Thank you, everybody. I will try. I will certainly try, yes."

Meghan McCain feels victimized by Trump’s attacks on Omar: ‘You’re taking away my agency to criticize her’

Published

Meghan McCain found a way to make herself the victim of President Donald Trump's racist screed against Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN).

The president has been telling the Minnesota Democrat to return to her home country Somalia, which she fled as a refugee at 10, and accused her of supporting al-Qaeda as his supporters chanted "send her back" at a North Carolina rally.

"It was really dystopian," McCain said. "I was trying to go out to dinner and ignore politics. My family is in town, and came home and saw it on Twitter and then saw it on TV, and look."

After news of Trump's racist rant spoiled her evening out with relatives, McCain said she realized that his remarks had robbed her of something else.
