A Marine veteran in Orosi, California killed one of his adult daughters and wounded another before turning the gun on himself on Memorial Day.
The Tulare Sheriff’s Department said that 63-year old Anthony Alvarez was dead when deputies arrived at the home on Monday, according to KGPE. Authorities believe that he shot 37-year-old Jennifer Kimble, who was found dead, and 33-year-old Valerie Alvarez, who was in critical condition after being taken to a hospital in Fresno.
Detectives said that Kimble's 8-year-old daughter reported the shooting by calling 9-1-1. Two of Kimble's other daughters, ages 11 and 13, were also inside the home.
"Our heart goes out to her," Tulare Co. Sheriff’s Dept. Sgt. Chris Douglass told KGPE. "She had to take a brave step to do that with regard to what was happening in her home at the time."
Neighbors said that Kimble had moved into the home to to help care for her disabled sister after their mother died.
But it was unclear why Alvarez, who received a Purple Heart and other awards after serving as a Marine in Vietnam, would shoot his daughters on Memorial Day.
"That was the worst part," neighbor Melissa Gutierrez explained to the station. "It's on Memorial Day and we don't know what happened."
According to The Associated Press, Kimble was employed as a cafeteria worker at a nearby elementary school. The children are being care for by their father, who was at work when the shootings happened.
