On her show Monday night, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow briefly reported on new revelations regarding the ongoing IRS scandal.
A ranking member of the House Ways and Means Committee released IRS documents earlier in the day that showed progressive groups -- not just tea party organizations -- were included on lists used to screen tax-exemption applications. The documents cast doubt on the claim the IRS had singled out conservatives for additional scrutiny.
"Or maybe the IRS inspector general should explain not disclosing until now that the IRS was scrutinizing tax avoiding political groups both on the conservative side and on the liberal side," Maddor remarked. "Turns out it wasn't just tea party groups, it was also groups labelled progressive -- which means this whole thing is over now, right?"
But Republicans are unlikely to let the alleged scandal disappear too quickly.
Though the inspectors general report concluded the lists used to screen tax-exemption applications were the primary wrongdoing committed by the IRS, the Republican head of the Ways and Means Committee insists that, "Being on a BOLO [list] is different than being targeted and abused by the IRS." The liberal groups subjected to IRS scrutiny are likely to disagree.
