Update: Davis filibuster succeeds amid chaos as Republicans fail to legally pass anti-abortion bill
The Texas Senate was deafened by noise coming from the gallery on Tuesday night as Democrats attempted to block an extreme anti-abortion bill.
With about ten minutes until the legislative session ended at midnight, Texas state Sen. Leticia Van De Putte (D-San Antonio) was informed she wouldn't be recognized because the Senate had moved onto a new motion. In response, she asked when a female legislator must raise her voice to be heard over her male colleagues.
"Mr. President, parliamentary inquiry," she said on the Senate floor. "At what point must a female senator raise her hand or her voice to be recognized over the male colleagues in the room?"
Her remarks resulted in loud applause and cheering from the Senate gallery, which lasted for nearly 15 minutes. The gallery continued to deafen the Texas Senate until shortly after midnight.
Though Republicans had halted a filibuster started by Sen. Wendy Davis (D-Fort Worth), Democrats in the Senate continued to delay a vote on the bill until midnight.
