Ohio Democrat warns GOP: ‘Warrior women’ are coming for the unrelenting womb-regulators
State Senator Nina Turner (D-Cleveland) warned Republicans on Thursday that “warrior women” wouldn’t tolerate their attempts to control their bodies.
During a rally at the Ohio Statehouse in protest of new abortion restrictions, Turner noted that Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis (D-Fort Worth) had staged an 11-hour filibuster to kill extreme anti-abortion legislation.
“Thank God we have warrior women all over the country standing up for the cause,” Turner said. “And speaking of warrior women, how about Sen. Wendy Davis? She is certainly one of my new sheroes… Women in Texas, all over the country, and right here in Ohio are fed up. This isn’t about one bill or one state, it is about the unrelenting obsession with regulating a woman’s womb. Over 700 bills in 42 states in just the last few months have been introduced to regulate a woman’s constitutionally-guaranteed right to choose.”
The Ohio legislature on Thursday approved a $62 billion budget that contained a number of anti-abortion provisions.
The budget bill requires doctors to look for a fetal heartbeat before performing an abortion, withholds family-planning money from Planned Parenthood while increasing funding for anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers, and prohibits public hospitals from entering into patient-transfer agreements with abortion clinics.
The patient-transfer agreements provision threatens to shut down a number of abortion clinics. Since many private hospitals are religious, they are expected to reject transfer agreements with abortions clinics, forcing them to close.
