Rep. Jim Bridenstine (R-OK) on Tuesday assured those effected by abortion that they could be healed by the power of Jesus Christ.
In a speech on the House floor, Republican congressman said he supported the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act because research had found that a fetus was capable of experiencing pain at 20-weeks of gestation.
"The truth is that at 20-weeks these unborn children feel every bit of pain inflicted on them in the name of choice and in the name of convenience," he said. "Mr Speaker, what we do with this knowledge says at lot about us."
"If we turn a blind eye to the agony and suffering of our most vulnerable can we say we are still a nation who pursues life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? If we willingly embrace cruelty in the name of choice, then can we say with integrity that we continue to secure the blessings of liberty not only for ourselves but for our posterity?"
"The good news is that for those who have been effected by the pain of abortion, there is one who chose, who made a real choice, to endure pain on behalf of of all of us, and by his stripes we are healed," he concluded, referencing Jesus. "Mr. Speaker, as members of Congress, let us remember that even though we may not be able to hear their cries, we are not absolved from the guilt of ignoring their pain."
The Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act would prohibit abortion nationwide after 20 weeks from fertilization. The bill is based on the contentious claim that the human fetus can perceive pain past that point.
