Former Sen. Rick Santorum (PA) on Saturday castigated his fellow Republicans for representing only "job creators" and ignoring American workers.

“There’s a group of folks, interestingly enough, from those on the right of the Republican Party joining those on the left of the Republican Party saying we need to talk about more of one thing and we need to talk about less — or not at all — about other things,” Santorum said at the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa.

He said the rhetoric of both the right and left wings of the Republican Party praised free market economics and celebrated entrepreneurs.

"But we are missing something in that message," he continued. "I talked about it during the campaign all over the country -- something that a lot of folks didn't really capture when they said, 'Well, how did he do so well?' I mentioned that over two thirds of Americans don't go to college, very few of them are going to be entrepreneurs and run big companies. We need to talk to them too. We need to celebrate them. We can't just celebrate the job creators, we have to celebrate the job holders."

The motto of the Republican National Convention in 2012 -- "We built this" --- illustrated how the party had systematically ignored American workers, Santorum said.

"You saw it last election, they didn't want to vote for Barack Obama, but at least he went out and talked to them and least he went out and spoke about them," he added. "We didn't do that, we marginalized them."
