South Carolina mayor in trouble after hateful anti-LGBT Facebook rant

The mayor of tiny West Union, SC is under fire after she posted an inflammatory rant against same sex marriage on Facebook. According to Fox Carolina News, Mayor Linda Oliver took to the social medium earlier this week to post a screed against "queers" and say that same sex marriage is an affront to the Christian God.

Mayor Oliver remains defiant.

"I don't want it rammed down my throat," she said to Fox Carolina reporter Jennifer Phillips. "All I can say is if people want to crucify me that's fine. I know that following Jesus, I'm going to be crucified."

She was referring to the fact that in North Carolina's Buncombe County, less than 100 miles from West Union, a county clerk allowed 11 same sex couples to obtain marriage licenses.

On Facebook, Oliver wrote, "What's it gonna take to get these queers to realize they don't need a piece of paper. God will not bless their union because he plainly speaks against queers in the Bible. Want to cover your queer with insurance? Buy a policy. Want your queer to get your stuff when you die? Make a will."

When her remarks went public, activists founded a Recall West Union, SC Mayor Linda Oliver Facebook page.

"I got lambasted because I quoted the Bible and stuff like that on Facebook," Oliver explained. "And that's the way I feel."

She said that her feelings toward "queers" aren't personal, it's just how she was raised, saying, "The way I feel toward homosexuals is how I've been brought up."
