Bill O'Reilly uses image of dark-skinned Saint Nicholas to prove Santa is white

Monday night on his Fox News show, host Bill O'Reilly defended his colleague Megyn Kelly, who recently made news for declaring Santa to be a white man.

"As you may know, Ms. Megyn Kelly causing some controversy after she said last week that Santa is a white man and so is Jesus," he said. "That after an Internet column expressed disappointment with Santa's Caucasian profile. Immediately, immediately the far left was outraged."

"The historical truth is that Saint Nicholas, the prototype for Santa, was white," O'Reilly remarked. "He was born sometime around 280 A.D. in Asia Minor, now the country known as Turkey. Saint Nicholas was a very kind man, a protector of children and sailors, his feast day is celebrated on December 6."

The image of Saint Nicholas that O'Reilly used to illustrate his point showed a dark-skinned man.

Many religious icons depict Saint Nicholas as having a darker skin complexion, but others show him with a fair complexion and white hair.

"Historically, you can’t import a category like ‘white’ into fourth century Asia Minor," Harvard Professor Laura Nasrallah, an expert on early Christianity, told Politico on Monday.

As Media Matters noted, O'Reilly claimed the far-left media was to blame for the controversy surrounding the racial identity of Santa Claus.

"But in this case Ms. Kelly is correct," the Fox News host said. "Santa was a white person. Does that matter? No. It doesn't matter. The spirit of Santa transcends all racial boundaries. It's a spirit based on generosity, kindness to children, and magical moments. But for those who despise the Fox News Channel there's nothing magical about anything we do here."

"Because they cannot defeat us on the media battlefield, the far left seeks to demonize Fox News as a right-wing propaganda machine and a racist enterprise. That's why Ms. Megyn got headlines about a Santa Claus remark that was totally harmless."
