A California anti-immigrant group with ties to the white nationalist movement has released a new ad invoking Martin Luther King Jr. in an attempt to appeal to minorities.
The 30-second ad, paid for by Californians for Population Stabilization, began airing Tuesday in advance of next week’s holiday honoring the slain civil rights leader.
“The TV ads are running on several national cable networks, with much of the media buy focused on daytime programming that skews heavily toward unemployed minority audiences,” the group said in a press release.
The ads show black and white photos of displaced workers as a narrator asks how King would feel about 20 percent of black Americans being unemployed or underemployed.
The TV spot claims amnesty laws would give jobs to 11 million “illegal aliens” and admit 30 million more immigrant workers while 17 percent of Hispanics are out of work.
The ad also claims that “Americans of all races (have not seen) a wage increase in 40 years.”
One problem with the ad is that at least one study has shown that more immigrants create more economic opportunities for black workers.
Another problem with the ad is that its sponsor, which has been designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, is funded by white nationalist John Tanton, a retired Michigan ophthalmologist who founded the Federation for American Immigration Reform to help maintain “a European-American majority, and a clear one at that.”
The California group, which is part of Tanton’s FAIR network, also has ties to white nationalist John Vinson, a founding member of the neo-Confederate secession group League of the South, reported Right Wing Watch.
CAPS spokesman Joe Guzzardi, who wrote the group’s press release about the new ads, is a frequent blogger at the white nationalist website VDARE.
