The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office is seeking charges against a correctional officer for allegedly raping a female inmate.

The Journal Sentinel reported that Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. ordered an investigation after learning that the male officer was having sex with the inmate and tried to cover it up. The sheriff asked Assistant District Attorney Paul Tiffin to charge the 26-year-old officer with second-degree sexual assault, obstruction and misconduct in public office.

According to the paper, records showed the officer was arrested last week, but officials said that he was not currently being detained. But WDJT-TV reported on Monday that the officer was being held at the Waukesha County Jail.

Milwaukee County Sheriff spokesperson Fran McLaughlin said that the officer had resigned after the accusations came to light last week.

"Good — I won't have to represent him," Milwaukee County correctional workers union Local 567 President Kevin Schoofs told the Journal Sentinel. "Sounds like he's in serious trouble."
