'Jury selection process is rigged in favor of white supremacy' -- despite Ahmaud Arbery and Charlottesville results: report
Two recent high-profile verdicts that went against white defendants were "extraordinary cases" that don't represent the day-to-day reality that the judicial system perpetuates white supremacy, a report at Truthout laid out Friday.
In both the conviction of three men for murdering teenager Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia and the civil suit holding white supremacists liable for the deadly 2017 "Unite the Right" rally in 2017, jury-selection processes were skewed to whites.
But the fact that they ruled against white defendants were not representative, the report observed.
"Racial discrimination in high-profile cases like the Arbery murder trial and the Unite the Right civil suit reflect the day-to-day reality of the United States criminal legal system," wrote Truthout's Laura Jedeed. "While the juries in both trials ruled against the white defendants, this kind of outcome is far from a given."
Truthout quoted Stephen Bright, a lawyer and professor at Yale University.
"These are extraordinary cases. What we really ought to worry about is the day to day," Bright says. "The criminal justice system is the part of society least affected by the civil rights movement. We still have all-white juries today, in 2021, this many years after the Civil War."
Regarding the Arbery case, Bright noted, "The jury should represent the community. And a community that's 27 percent African American should have more than one Black person on the jury."Bottom of Form
The white supremacy case followed the same pattern, the report said:
"About 550 miles north, in Charlottesville, Virginia, a Black juror in the trial against white supremacists who organized the deadly, 2017 "Unite the Right" rally declared himself unconcerned with "racism against white/Caucasian people." The defense dismissed the juror but didn't do the same for white jurors who answered similarly. As in the Arbery trial, the prosecution challenged the dismissal. And, as in the Arbery trial, the judge refused to take action.
"Fury erupted at these judges almost immediately. Yet many activists and legal experts say the problem does not principally lie with the judges but with the law itself.
"None of the egregious things that have happened in any of these trials are outside of the bounds of American law," says Cat Brooks, co-founder of the Anti Police-Terror Project (APTP). Scott Roberts, senior director of criminal justice campaigns for Color of Change, agrees. He points to the case of Judge Olu Stevens in 2016, who threw out an all-white jury on racial grounds. "He recognized that discrimination was happening, … and he was suspended for 90 days."

According to a report from Mother Jones, a QAnon leader who has been promising fellow conspiracists that John F. Kennedy Jr. will soon return from the dead -- or hiding -- to lead the movement and help Donald Trump become president again, has a history of violence that includes an arrest for a domestic assault.
Michael Brian Protzman, who is known to QAnon adherents as Negative48, was arrested in Washington state's King County in 2019 for an "unlawful imprisonment – domestic violence" charge filed by his wife that led her to flee their home to a neighbor's house where she called 911.
According to research provided to Ali Breland of Mother Jones by Amanda Moore, Protzman -- who has told followers in Texas after the failure of JFK Jr. to show up "I am Jesus Christ" -- grew violent with his wife over going to marriage counseling.
"In July 2019, Protzman allegedly 'held [his wife] down on the bed, using both of his hands to physically restrain her, using one of his legs to brace hers,' and 'held her in this position for approximately two to three minutes until she told him that she would agree to marriage counseling so he would let her up.' When she then tried to leave the house, the documents say, Protzman grabbed her and prevented her from departing," Breland wrote.
The report goes on to note she later ran barefoot to a neighbor's home where she told the 911 dispatcher, "she is scared of Michael because he has 'blind rage' and she believes he may hit her."
"According to a police report, she complained that Protzman had recently 'been acting differently, not showering or working and believing in government conspiracies.' She also claimed Protzman had assaulted her before, strangling her roughly six years earlier," Mother Jones is reporting.
The report adds that, although the case was later dismissed "without prejudice this past June" it can once again be reopened if need be.

Marjorie Taylor Greene rant urges followers to sue doctors over ivermectin because it's used in Africa
In a series of tweets on Saturday morning of dubious scientific value, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) urged her followers to sue doctors to force them to prescribe ivermectin -- a deworming paste -- for the treatment of Covid-19 and to also file a wrongful death suit if a family member was denied and passed away.
According to the Georgia Republican -- who helped run a family construction business before being elected to the House -- ivermectin is used in Africa --which she believes has lower Covid death rates -- and therefore should be used in the U.S. instead of CDC-approved vaccines.
In her 7-part tweet rant, she declared, "Africans have safely taken Ivermectin for decades and many clinical trials have proven Ivermectin to be a very effective safe & cheap treatment against #Covid," before adding, "Any doctor refusing to prescribe Ivermectin for Covid is participating in politics that is killing people."
She then wrote, "With Africa's amazingly low death rate from Covid, combined with the lowest vaccine rate in the world & very little masking, the 'civilized' leaders of the world should immediately stop their tyrannical forced shutdowns, vaccine mandates, & absurd masking policies. If you had a loved one die from Covid, and they were not allowed to take Ivermectin or monoclonal antibodies, you might have a wrongful death suit in your hands."
"With all that is know about #Covid and all the covid studies and the known miracle of low deaths in Africa with very little vaccinations, it's no wonder the Tyrants announce a new #covidvariant from Africa and apply travel restrictions. They control you with irrational fear," she later accused.
