Conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer set off a firestorm earlier this week when he said that his fellow Republicans need to let go of their quixotic obsession with the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Think Progress reported that in the wake of the statements, conservatives have lashed out at Krauthammer, accusing him of betraying his principles.
“Politically speaking the administration has won,” Krauthammer said in an appearance on Fox News. “They ran out the clock."
Krauthammer said that the country at large "has grown tired" of discussing the attack, which killed four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens.
Larry Ward of the Special Operations Speaks (SOS) blog told Think Progress by email, "“Mr. Krauthammer’s premise for his assumption is flawed. Benghazi is not nor never was about politics. It is only about justice and accountability.”
“We can never and will never relent on our mission to find justice for those massacred and injured in Benghazi,” he said.
At right-leaning commentary site HotAir.com, Allahpundit wrote, "It’s actually not true that the public is tired of this investigation."
Benghazi he said, is a "liability for the Democratic nominee-in-waiting" that conservatives will exploit in the 2016 race. The matter is "(w)orth pursuing, then, even on grounds of political expedience."
Bob Adams of conservative pressure group Revive America gave a similar message to Think Progress, saying, "The country is not tired of it." The Benghazi attack, he said, "violates probably one of the core ideas of what it means to be an American which is, we don’t leave our men and women behind on the battle field.”
Furthermore, said Adams, "there are many questions that need to be answered, picking one would be difficult. I think the larger question is, what do we not know?”
