Indiana man fatally shoots wife, then self in church school parking lot after rape charges

An Indiana man allegedly fatally shot his wife and then turned the gun on himself in a school parking lot just months after he was charged for raping her.

According to WMAQ, officers responding to St. Mary Catholic School in Griffith, Indiana on Monday found Nina Castro on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound.

Remanard Castro, the victim's husband, fled on a motorcycle, but an officer caught up to him at his home. The officer located the suspect in his garage holding a handgun, and ordered him to put it down.

Instead, Remanard Castro shot himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Griffith Police Chief Greg Mance told WMAQ that Nina Castro had been at St. Mary's on Monday to pick up her 14-year-old son from an after-school program. She had already picked up her 16-year-old daughter from Bishop Noll High School. Both children were present when the shooting occurred.

Mance said that Nina Castro had recently left Griffith to go live with her mother in Chicago. Divorce proceedings were expected to be finalized on June 10.

WMAQ reported that Remanard Castro had been charged earlier this year "with rape and criminal confinement for allegedly sexually assaulting his wife at his home last year."

St. Mary’s was closed for the Easter holiday, but children participating in the after-school program were put into lockdown after the shooting. None of the children were hurt.
