Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh found himself being schooled by a transgender woman on the air on Thursday after he used the term "tranny" to describe her.
In an audio clip obtained by Media Matters, a woman named Tina confronted Limbaugh for linking same-sex marriage rights to the expansion of transgender rights earlier in the show.
But Limbaugh explained that Tina had misunderstood him because he had "been for trannies for a long time."
"I did hear you using that term," Tina said. "And a lot of us do find that to be rather offensive because of the way that its been historically used."
"Oh, I didn't know that," Limbaugh replied innocently. "Tranny is offensive?"
The conservative host defended himself by saying that liberal actor Alex Baldwin had once used the term.
"He has made a lot of homophobic comments, and he wrote this big apologia," Limbaugh explained. "And he used the term tranny as though it were hip, and an inside baseball term that made him cool with the transgender [community]."
Soon after that, the conversation shifted as Limbaugh became curious about how a transgender woman might "trick" a man into having sex.
"Sometimes people have oral sex or anal sex in the dark," the caller finally pointed out.
"Oh, that's right!" Limbaugh exclaimed. "I didn't even think of that! Oh, you're right. Because everybody -- yeah. Aw, gee."
