Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) blistered her GOP colleagues and the Supreme Court’s ruling in the Hobby Lobby case just before a bill reversing the decision was blocked.
“Guys, this is 2014, not 1914,” Warren said. “Most Americans thought this was settled long, long ago. But for some reason, Republicans keep dragging us back here over and over and over again.”
Warren also explicitly linked the high court’s ruling last month, which allowed corporations to claim religious exemptions in denying their female employees access to birth control, to Republican policies against reproductive health.
“The Hobby Lobby case is stunning, but not entirely surprising,” she said. “Giant corporations and their right-wing allies fight every day in Congress to protect their own privileges and to bend the laws to benefit themselves. They devote enormous resources to the task. Sometimes, we beat them anyway.”
However, as RH Reality Check reported, the Protect Women’s Health From Corporate Interference Act, which was sponsored by Warren and 41 other Democratic lawmakers, was blocked after failing to gain support from Republicans.
The bill would have denied employers the right to bypass the reproductive health mandate of the Affordable Care Act on religious grounds.
