‘Daily Show’ hammers Washington football team: ‘Change the f*cking name’
While host Jon Stewart said on Thursday that The Daily Show would never intentionally misrepresent someone’s views, correspondent Jason Jones left no doubt about his take on the name of Washington D.C.’s NFL team.
“Hey, He Who Stands On The Wrong Side Of History,” Jones told owner Dan Snyder. “Change the f*cking name.”
Jones did his research on the culture behind the team’s name, venturing out to a home game to meet fans clad in full “Native American” regalia, who were happy to defend it — up to a point.
“Would you call a Native American a ‘Redskin’?” Jones asked one unidentified man.
“Do you know any Native Americans?” the man asked in return.
“About eight of them,” Jones confirmed.
“Do I not look Native American?” the man asked. “Was I not born in this country?”
Later, the man was shown telling Jones’ production staff he “didn’t approve” of the footage of the interview.
“This was a culture so proud, they didn’t even want their faces on TV,” Jones said.
The eight Native Americans Jones knew were a group of activists he interviewed to get the other side of the debate surrounding the team’s name, and whether they were being “oversensitive” regarding the name.
“After every single thing that American Indian people have been through, how can you possibly say that we are thin-skinned and oversensitive?” one man said. “We have to say things like ‘cultural sensitivity,’ because as soon as we say ‘racism’ or ‘racist,’ the argument shuts down.”
Jones also interviewed a quartet of Washington fans, each of them clad in team merchandise and telling Jones they were part Cherokee.
“I think sometimes the conversation that’s happening right now is that we need to be sitting down talking to the people that are offended,” one of the fans, 56-year-old Kelli O’Dell, told Jones.
As the Washington Post reported earlier this week, Jones obliged her request, bringing in the Native activists for a discussion that was not aired in full. O’Dell told the Post she “felt in danger” and worried that the show would defame her.
