A Republican candidate for commissionership of Pueblo County, Colorado drew gasps and hoots of derision when he said during a televised debate that he believes that the Sandy Hook massacre in Newtown, Connecticut was staged.

According to the Pueblo Chieftain newspaper, Tom Ready, who is vying to unseat Democratic incumbent Sal Pace, affirmed his belief that the Sandy Hook shooting was a "false flag" attack staged by gun control activists.

Pace was responding to a dig from Ready about energy policy Wednesday night when he said, "I thought we agreed not to go negative, but what about your posting on your Facebook site linking to a story that questioned whether Sandy Hook really happened?”

Ready replied that he was trying to open a discussion, “I don’t think (the Sandy Hook shootings have) been proven. And what’s wrong with open discussion?”

The 200 or so people in the studio audience gasped audibly and some people made sounds of disgust at the statement.

"Thank you very much," Ready replied before going on. "Some of the people, if you recall, there was a picture of a man walking in whose daughter had died, he was smiling and joking. When he walked into the room, he turned and all of a sudden, had tears in his eyes. Why?"

A "truther" is a person who believes in spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary that a public event or disaster never took place. 9-11 truthers believe that the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 were a false flag attack engineered by the Bush administration in order to frighten the population into accepting its subsequent authoritarianism and embracing the rush to war in Iraq.

Sandy Hook truthers believe that gun-control activists staged the shooting of 26 people in Newtown, Connecticut in December of 2012 in order to pave the way for tighter restrictions on firearms. The 20 dead children and six dead adults and the disturbed man who took their lives are liberal phantasms, truthers believe, that are being used to ramp up hysteria which will lead to widespread government confiscation of weapons.
