Author Marilynne Robinson: We’re all acting beneath our dignity and the media is making it worse

Published

on

n this clip, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marilynne Robinson tells Bill Moyers that as a society — and that includes politicians — we are stooping way too low in the way we treat and speak to one another. Watch:

Robinson says: “[W]e’ve gotten into the habit of condescending to one another so that we’re trying to get little cheers from the audience rather than actually dealing with people in good faith, telling them what they need to know, acknowledging the complexity of incredibly complex problems that we have… I think that a lot of people use this tribal language and so on to enflame other people and get little groups to give donations, whatever. But basically, it is beneath their dignity.”

And the media’s appetite for sensationalism, Robinson says, “reinforces the tendency toward meanness and public discourse.”

During the interview, Camerota played Lewandowski a clip of himself telling the House Judiciary Committee that he is under no obligation to be honest when he appears on cable news shows.

Lewandowski responded to this by angrily ranting about former FBI officials James Comey and Andrew McCabe, but Camerota wouldn't let him off the hook.

"Corey, when do you lie?" she asked him. "Are you lying now, for instance?"

The hosts of "Fox & Friends" giggled and gloated over Corey Lewandowski's contentious appearance before the House Judiciary Committee.

President Donald Trump's former campaign manager claimed executive privilege over testimony he gave before special counsel Robert Mueller, admitted he had lied in TV appearances and cracked jokes during five hours of testimony -- and the Fox News hosts were delighted.

"He gave as good as he got," said co-host Steve Doocy.

Co-host Ainsley Earhardt was laughing so hard she could barely speak.

"She said the truth shall set you free," Earhardt said, quoting Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) through guffaws. "'Answer the question,' there was no question."
