A 23-year-old Florida man with schizophrenia was arrested Wednesday and charged with first-degree murder after he reportedly beheaded his mother and tried to throw her body in the garbage.

According to NBC Miami, Christian Jose Gomez was angry at his mother for nagging him about household chores.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office reported that deputies responded to a 911 call on Wednesday evening about a dead body near the Gomez residence in Oldsmar, a town outside of Tampa.

When they arrived, officers found the headless body of 48-year-old Maria Suarez Cassagne. They apprehended Gomez, her son, a couple of blocks from the house after a short chase.

A sheriff's office spokesman said that Gomez hit his mother over the head with an ax, then dragged her body to the garage, where he cut off her head. He placed her head into one garbage can and tried to put the body inside as well, but found it too heavy.

Gomez' older brother discovered the body.

The suspect told police that he was angry about his mother "nagging" him about moving some boxes into the attic and had been planning the murder for two days.

A relative said that Gomez was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 20 and committed to a psychiatric facility for at least a year for evaluation. He was released on medications to his family's care.

The sheriff's office said that they do not know whether Gomez has an attorney. He is being held without bond.
