British boy band One Direction are reportedly going on "extended hiatus" after the new year following one member's high-profile departure.

According to People magazine, the four remaining members of the group will be pursuing solo projects and take a break from the group's demanding schedule of touring, promoting and recording material.

Earlier this year, singer Zayn Malik left the group, citing stress and a need to pursue a more authentic musical direction.

Remaining members Harry Styles, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson will continue promoting the band's fifth album through March, then disband for the foreseeable future. They do not intend to tour in support of the as-yet-untitled new album, which is scheduled for release later this year.
