South Carolina native Stephen Colbert offered some advice to Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) on Wednesday heading into the state's upcoming Democratic presidential primary.

"If you like boiled peanuts, it'll certainly give you a leg up in South Carolina," the Late Show host advised. "People up here, when I offer them this food, they go, 'Oh, here comes Colbert with more of his damp food.'"

Besides the peanuts, Colbert shared a pair of beers with the senator, while also asking him about his penchant for riding in the middle seat when flying.

"Is that penance for something?" Colbert asked. "Why travel in the middle seat, sir?"

"Because we couldn't get the aisle or the damn window, that's why," Sanders replied.

"Do you think America is in the middle seat right now, metaphorically speaking?" Colbert asked as a follow-up.

"Metaphorically speaking, people are being squeezed -- no question about it," the senator said.
