A fight has already broken out between surrogates for Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump anticipating what will happen in tonight's debate.
Clinton surrogates are demanding that moderator Lester Holt call out Trump's lies in real time during the debate so an independent person unaffiliated with either campaign asserts when something isn't true. Trump surrogates are mocking the request, claiming that Clinton is afraid of Trump and will be weak in debating him just as she'll be weak against ISIS.
The fact check problem, is a genuine concern, whether Trump surrogates want to admit it or not. Over the weekend two separate reports came out detailing the outright lies Trump and his campaign has spread in the last year. Politico Magazine counted each time Trump lied and estimated that he lies every three minutes and 15 seconds. Clinton, by contrast about a quarter as much as Trump.
An NBC report (Holt's own network), called Trump's bogus bluster quite simply unprecedented. "Never in modern presidential politics has a major candidate made false statements as routinely as Trump has," they wrote of the distortions. "Over and over, independent researchers have examined what the Republican nominee says and concluded it was not the truth — but 'pants on fire' (PolitiFact) or 'four Pinocchios' (Washington Post Fact Checker)"
In fact, the problem with misleading mistakes is so dire, last year, Politifact named Trump the "Liar of the Year," and calculated that 76 percent of Trump's claims are false.
Perhaps that is why Bloomberg News will be running a fact-check alongside the debate tonight. On the off-chance Holt doesn't hold the candidates accountable when they flash a fictitious delusion, the video below will alert any viewers.
