An 18-year-old student physically assaulted and harassed a transgender teacher at a Lower Manhattan high school on Dec. 6, the New York Daily News reports.

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at the Murry Bergtraum High School near the Brooklyn Bridge. "Yo, tr*nny, do you have any food for me?" the student reportedly said before grabbing the teacher's chest.

The teacher reported the incident to school officials who called the police, and the student was taken into custody and later taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation after police learned that he was schizophrenic.

Commenting on the matter, Toya Holness, a spokeswoman for the Department of Education said, "We take this matter very seriously. We are committed to providing all students and staff with a safe, supportive and inclusive environment."
