On Saturday, the Washington Post said that President Donald Trump consulted with Attorney Gen. Jeff Sessions to see if the charges against Arpaio could be dropped before he went to trial for contempt of a federal order to cease and desist his campaign of terror against the Latino community in Arizona's Maricopa County.
On Friday night, just hours before Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas, Trump pardoned Arpaio, which some people have suggested that this might be a trial balloon for the process of granting pardons to people implicated in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, which is probing into Trump's connections to Russia and possible collusion with that country to tamper with the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.
As news about Sessions spread, people wondered what else the Trump administration could to in order to further demonstrate its contempt for the law.
