President Donald Trump is back attacking the leadership of his own party.
In a pair of tweets sent out on Thursday morning, Trump accused Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) of creating a "mess" ahead of a crucial vote to raise the debt ceiling this September.
"I requested that Mitch M & Paul R tie the Debt Ceiling legislation into the popular V.A. Bill (which just passed) for easy approval," he wrote. "They didn't do it so now we have a big deal with Dems holding them up (as usual) on Debt Ceiling approval. Could have been so easy-now a mess!"
Congress will need to raise the debt ceiling next month, or the government will lack the authority to pay off its debts, which could trigger a default. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin has called for the passage of a "clean" debt ceiling hike, although Trump seems to be suggesting that he wants to tie other pieces of his agenda to the vote.
