CNN contributor Keith Boykin blew up on a Trump supporter on CNN Tuesday after she tried to defend President Donald Trump’s obsession with publicly attacking black athletes who do not show him proper deference.
Trump supporter Carrie Sheffield tried to explain that the president shouldn’t be criticized for spending his time attacking black athletes such as Marshawn Lynch and LiAngelo Ball because he just likes to say what’s on his mind.
“We know the president expresses himself in the moment,” Sheffield said. “He uses a lot of passion.”
Boykin, however, thought that the President of the United States should put more thought into how he publicly expresses himself than an angry sports talk radio caller, and he said Trump was primarily doing this to gin up white resentment at successful black athletes.
“Trump is playing to his base of white racial resentment,” Boykin said. “A core of what he’s doing and trying to get rid of the Haitians, going after LaVar Ball, going after the NFL athletes.”
Sheffield insisted that there was no racial element, as the president likes to publicly yell at people of all races. Boykin grew fed up at this argument, however, and slammed her for having such low standards.
“The President of the United States should not be tweeting about professional athletes, he should be running the country!” Boykin insisted. “We have crises in North Korea, Afghanistan and Syria, and the president is busy talking about professional athletes and what they’re doing. Doesn’t he have something more important to do with his time?”
