Polls are closing in Alabama, and results from the controversial special Senate election between GOP candidate Roy Moore and Democratic candidate Doug Jones are pouring in.
This special election first made waves when President Donald Trump threw his weight behind "establishment" GOP candidate Luther Strange, who temporarily filled Sessions' vacated seat. Trump's former adviser Steve Bannon, on the other hand, threw his and Breitbart's hats in the ring for Roy Moore, a twice-fired Alabama Supreme Court chief justice who was seen as anti-establishment for his unabashed conservative views. The president warmed to Moore after he beat Strange.
In November, the Washington Post broke a story alleging that multiple women dated Moore when they were teens and he was a 30-something Assistant District Attorney in Gadsden, Alabama. More and more women began coming forward, and many right-wing pundits, including Fox News' Sean Hannity, supported him in spite of what they called a liberal smear campaign. The Post became a target following those counter-accusations, which led to attempts by right-wingers to infiltrate and discredit the paper.
