Monday is Sen. Tina Smith's (D-MN) first official day on Capitol Hill and CNN host Alisyn Camerota couldn't help but notice that she still has an air of enthusiasm and idealism left.

Smith is the former lieutenant governor that was appointed to former Sen. Al Franken's (D-MN) seat. Camerota wanted to know about the upcoming and if Smith would be supporting President Donald Trump's demand to fund the U.S./Mexico border wall and fighting to .

"I've only been here for five days, but it seems if we have bipartisan agreement this ought to be a path to citizenship for thinks young people brought to this country as young people," Smith said. "If Republicans agree and Democrats agree, we ought to be able to come together. That's where i'm going to be focused."

Camerota couldn't help but notice the new senator lacked the jaded cynicism that comes from most legislators.

"It's funny talking to you newbies, the optimism you still have," Camerota said. "It hasn't been beaten out of you yet by Capitol Hill."

The two also discussed the powerful speech Oprah Winfrey made during Sunday's Golden Globe awards.

"She gave a great speech, I have a lot of respect for her, and the great thing is anyone can run for president in this country," Smith noted.
