Dem senator blisters Trump 'minions': 'There’s no institution they won’t attack to protect their lying president'

Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) unloaded on House Republicans' efforts to discredit the FBI during an appearance on CNN Thursday.

When asked by host Alisyn Camerota if she was as disturbed by some FBI agents' behavior as some of her Republican colleagues were, Hirono came out swinging against the GOP.

"I'm very disturbed by the president and his minions, particularly in the House," she said. "Apparently there's no institution they won't attack to protect their lying president. The FBI, by the way, is the agency that protects the people of America from homegrown terrorists and other bad actors. Going after the FBI to protect the president is, in my view, reckless and unconscionable."

Hirono also laughed off her colleague Sen. Ron Johnson's (R-WI) attempt to hype up a text message between two FBI agents that referred to a "secret society" that was actually about one of the agents handing out calendars to a handful of colleagues.

"There's an all-out effort to denigrate the Mueller investigation, to divert attention from the investigation," she said. "So with these kinds of off-the-wall, in my view, kind of allegations by Ron Johnson, I believe he's already walked it back because there's nothing to this."
