Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) on Thursday slammed Donald Trump as “self-absorbed,” accusing the president of dereliction of duty over reports he plans to flee Washington D.C. for his private resort in Florida as the government nears a shutdown.
Trump is planning on throwing a one-year inauguration anniversary party on Saturday that costs $100,000-per-couple. That gathering will take place a day after the government shuts down, assuming leaders in Congress are unable to spass a spending bill.
Trump has taken a back seat in the congressional showdown, save for a tweet he sent out Thursday morning that undermined his own party’s plan to avoid a government shutdown. As CNN’s Jim Acosta reports, Trump is mulling whether he can "issue a tweet" to prove the federal government is not shutting down.
