White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders on Monday insisted that President Donald Trump could take credit for the eventual end of the government shutdown.
At Monday's White House briefing, Sanders was asked how a Trump campaign ad claiming Democrats are "complicit" in murders committed by undocumented immigrants contributed to a deal between Senate Democrats and Republicans to reopen the government.
"The president's number one focus is our national security," Sanders opined. "He's been very strong on discussing the need for border security and tying that directly to national security."
Sanders, however, echoed her White House colleagues who have claimed that President Donald Trump's campaign is an "outside group."
"Those [ads] aren't being done by the White House," she said. "I can't give you any details."
