Noam Chomsky reveals just how close Donald Trump is to causing a worldwide catastrophe

Published

on

Famed linguist and activist Noam Chomsky says that the United States under President Donald Trump is driving the world closer to catastrophe than it’s been in decades.

In an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Chomsky pointed out that the so-called “Doomsday Clock” created by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists’ Science and Security Board is now closer to midnight than at any time since the height of the Cold War.

“Just now a week ago it was moved two minutes to midnight, after a year of Trump,” Chomsky said. “That’s the closest it’s been to terminal disaster since 1953 when the US and later the USSR exploded thermonuclear weapons demonstrating that human intelligence had now developed the capacity to destroy everything on Earth.”

Chomsky said that the Trump administration in particular had accelerated two key risks to humanity through its refusal to act to combat climate change and its saber-rattling with a nuclear-armed North Korea.

Nonetheless, he did see some room for optimism in the United States, despite the dire current political landscape.

“Go back to the 2016 election, the focus of attention is of course on the Trump victory,” he said. “However something else happened that was astonishing: Bernie Sanders, who came from nowhere, even used the scare word ‘socialist,’ had no support from private wealth… he might’ve won the election, and is now far and away the most respected political figure in the country.”

Trump’s populist makeover of the GOP could blow up in his face in 2020

Published

on

President Donald Trump has undeniably left his impact on the Republican Party. Yes, it had mostly the same platform, demographics, and racial grievances before him as after, but the party has taken a sharp swing towards populist posturing, emphasizing its more nationalist elements over traditional conservative values.

This transformation has been remarkably successful for Trump. But as Los Angeles Times Washington bureau chief David Lauter warned on Thursday, a new poll from USC Dornsife/LA Times suggests it has not built a winning coalition for the GOP in 2020.

Trump slurred the ‘spoiled rich Jewish guys’ who played at his golf club

Published

President Donald Trump has taken heavy criticism for repeatedly suggesting that Jewish voters who back Democrats are "disloyal" — a degrading anti-Semitic stereotype.

But Trump's disdain for Jewish people goes back years. Most famously, there was the incident in which he allegedly said that he only wants "short guys that wear yarmulkes every day" counting his money.

Tea Party ex-lawmaker admits he was wrong about Obama — calls him a much better president than Trump

Published

Sidestepping questions over whether he will primary Donald Trump, former Tea Party Republican lawmaker Joe Walsh launched a brutal attack on the president comparing him unfavorably to one of his previous foes: President Barack Obama.

Speaking with CNN hosts John Berman and Alisyn Camerota, the former Illinois congressman refused to commit to running but sketched out what any GOP candidates running against the embattled president must do to have a chance to rally disaffected Republican voters.

"I think we overanalyze Trump, "Walsh began. "He's not complicated, he's a horrible human being. He's a bad, bad guy."
