A police officer was shot dead and two sheriff's deputies were wounded in a small Georgia town on Friday by a suspect who was then himself slain, local media reported, citing law enforcement officials.

Local television station WSB-TV said the incident took place at a home in a subdivision of Locust Grove, a city about 30 miles southeast of Atlanta.

Local TV images showed police tape around two homes in a cul-de-sac.

One Locust Grove police officer and two Henry County sheriff's deputies were shot, WSB-TV reported. The station later reported that the Locust Grove police officer died of his injuries.

The condition of the sheriff's deputies was not immediately known.

The Locust Grove Police Department did not provide immediate details on the shooting, and Henry County sheriff's officials could not be reached.
