A Florida Republican lawmaker did something very rare on Wednesday -- he touted low ratings that he received from the National Rifle Association.
Speaking with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, Republican Florida state Rep. Chris Latvala boasted of getting bad grades from the NRA when it comes to his votes on gun-related issues.
'I'm proud to be the lowest rated Republican by the NRA," he said. "I have a 'D' rating."
Latvala went on to say that, even though most of his Republican colleagues were to his right on gun issues, he was still optimistic that he could get some of them on board with a bipartisan gun bill that would improve safety for Florida school students.
"I think there are numerous, you know, conservatives, numerous Republicans that see these common sense gun measures, and they certainly will support them," he said. "I think the bills that you will see introduced this week will be bipartisan in nature."
Latvala also defended the students protesting in favor of stricter gun laws this week, and shamed any right-wing conspiracy theorists who believe that they are being paid by George Soros.
"I frankly am inspired by them," he said. "I think that anybody that would question their motives should look in the mirror."
