Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ) is furious that President Donald Trump was talked out of raising the age to own assault weapons.
During an interview with SiriusXMRadio host Dean Obeidallah, Coleman castigated the president for his so-called solutions following the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida that killed 17.
Trump repeatedly said that he was raising the age to own such weapons after coverage of the shooting and meeting with survivors of mass shootings. But when the president had the National Rifle Association bigwigs over for lunch at the White House, he stopped talking about it. The NRA has maintained the age should not be raised.
Coleman praised the students turned activists that have taken up the cause of fighting gun violence. She noted they are not merely students but they're bringing their parents and families, many of whom come from conservative areas, along with them in the crusade.
"They've got to see the fear, the concern and the threats that their own children are expressing," she said. "I hope that that compels them and changes their heart about the legitimacy of the people having these terrible guns, access to terrible ammunition, and not putting the kind of support services for mental health."
She noted that when the Constitution was drawn up they were still firing muskets and talking about militias, not automatic weapons that explode once entering a body. She predicted a change was coming in the U.S.
"I think everybody realizes, except the one third (of America) that think he’s a legitimate president," she continued. "The majority of this country knows he’s taking us down the wrong path. He is dangerous, he is incompetent, he is ignorant, he is racist, he is un-American and he doesn’t deserve to be in that office."
"Donald Trump has no class at all – it’s such a cowardly way of doing what he did," she continued. "And it’s beneath the dignity of the office of the President of the United States."
