In a Tuesday afternoon tweet, Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) implored President Donald Trump not to fire special counsel Robert Mueller — and threatened the president with impeachment when and if he takes that step.
"We are begging the president not to fire the special counsel," the Arizona Republican tweeted. "Don't create a constitutional crisis. Congress cannot preempt such a firing. Our only constitutional remedy is after the fact, through impeachment."
"No one wants that outcome," he continued. "Mr. President, please don't go there."
